Truman vs. Jonas

I will attempt to show you the similarities and differences of Jonas the main character in the book “The Giver “and Truman the main character in the movie “The Truman Show”. I really enjoyed reading “The Giver” and watching “The Truman Show” which soon made me realize that they had a multitude of things in common. I will describe their similarities and differences in their feelings/emotions. I will also tell you about their similarities and differences in the evidence they have established in search of the truth. I will even discuss the similarities and differences in the two different plots.
Jonas’s and Truman’s feelings are similar; they both want to explore “the rest of the world”. They both are true to themselves and true to their feelings. The characters are also very angry with their inability to leave. The differences are that Truman was born with controlled feelings and Jonas wasn’t born with feelings, he acquired them later through memories which he received through “The Giver”. Also Truman always wanted to leave the community, but Jonas realized that he wanted to leave as soon as he started receiving the memories.
Both Jonas and Truman have experienced some clues that helped them realize what is true about their community. The similarities are that they are both suspicious of something and they are both accepting of what is occurring around them. The differences are that the clues came later for Truman and for Jonas at a younger age. Truman’s clues were the light bulb falling from the ceiling, the rain following him, the girl confessing, and the radio reading out his whereabouts. Jonas’s clues were the airplane flying above the community, the apple changing color, and the crowd changing color.
The similarities of the plot are that both Jonas and Truman were adopted. They both want to escape but they don’t know where to go to. The differences are that Jonas was adopted by parents and Truman was adopted by a movie company. Also Truman is the only one who doesn’t know in the community about the “Truman Show” but on the other hand in Jonas’s community most of the society doesn’t know the truth about the community.
Here are some of the similarities and differences of the characters Jonas and Truman. I have realized that they have many similarities and differences. Their similarities are such that I thought that the author of “The Giver” directed the film “The Truman Show”. Their similarities start with their emotions, and in their quest for the truth. Their differences are fewer but are important in the understanding of the story. I highly recommend that if you have not read the book or have not seen the film that you do so soon.

Discuss whether Jonas' assignment as the next Reciever of Memory is an honor or a punishment.

I think that Jonas' assignment as the next receiver of memory is an honor. It is the most respected and important assignment in his community. But most importantly you learn new things, both bad and good, and you also get to have feelings that no other person has experienced.

Discuss similarities between our society and the society in your novel.

The similarities between our society and the novel are endless. I will attempt to name a few of them. In Jonas' community they have a government and laws which keep their community under control. They are also divided into families of four, the father, the mother, the son, and the daughter. They have schools just like us where they are educated and prepared for their assignment. And they have the common everyday entertainment, a bicycle which they learn how to ride and adore. Moreover they have jobs (assignments) which they are trained for from a young age.

Compare the relationship Jonas has with the Giver to the relationship he has with his mother, father, and sister?

I believe that the relationship that Jonas and the Giver have is meaningful, he is closer to the Giver than he is with his family. The Giver can share his memories and opinions with Jonas. The Giver also knows what Jonas feels like and what he's going through. On the other hand his parents don't know how he feels, there conversations are limited because Jonas can't talk about his assignment. But both the Giver and his family take care of him, love him and want the best for him.

If you were writing a horror story or directing a horror movie what details would you use?

If I were writing or directing a horror movie I would most probably give it a scary title like "The Invisible" or "Quarantine". I would be sure to use heart pounding scenes where the viewers can't bare to watch. My story would be based on something scary, like a murder. I would add details to all the scary scenes to make them look realistic. I would use eerie music in the background to create a sense of"something bad is about to happen", also doors that cringe as you are about to open or close them. A young cast is really important specifically young girls wearing dresses that are carrying dolls who happen to be possessed. Also lots of blood, guts, food and vomit. No more detail because this is starting to become vivid and I want to get to sleep. Good night! Come to think of it my story would take place in a haunted house which was owned by a psychopath. The haunted house would be located on a DEAD END street in Detroit, Michigan. It would be a run down ram shackle of a house that when upon entering you would be hearing little girls screaming using high pitched voices saying"Do you want to play with me"? Then you would be hearing sounds of foot steps running on a wooden floor."Clop, clop, clop........to be continued......

Respond to a prediction

In 2155, computers will replace human teachers.

I agree, I think that in 2155 computers will replace human teachers. I believe that this is true because technology is advancing so quickly. Computers and new and advanced technology are slowly replacing humans in every day life. In the future computers will slowly replace everything including school teachers. For example the computer will create lesson plans, teach classes , take attendance and even provide copies. You won't even have to go to an institution. You will log on from home and attend classes in the comfort of your own living room. This would also be more Eco-friendly because you would not use transportation to get to school, eliminating the wastes that were emitted into the air.Technology will become more and more of a trend. Technology will advance and take the place of humans in almost every aspect of human life. I am looking forward to a future with computers.“I have successfully edited by blog!”.

What can you tell me about youre favorite character?

My favorite character is a typical teenager who is 15 years old. He has a great sense of humor, he is a great student and looks forward to going to college, but he hates maths. His best subject in school was art and design. He is tall and grew 4 inches over the summer, people think that his mom is his aunt or sister. His parents just went through a horrible divorce. They were constantly fighting, before and after the divorce. He lives with his 32 year old mother. Over the past summer my favorite character started skateboarding. For his birthday his mother bought him a Tony Hawk poster off the Internet. The only person he looks up to and adores is Tony Hawk. He talks to the poster (as in Tony Hawk) asking for advice, talking about the new tricks he has achieved in skateboarding, and telling him about Alicia (his girlfriend). I can relate to this character because I also enjoy skateboarding. I could even say that Tony Hawk is one of my role models when it come to skateboarding. He is going through an internal conflict because of his mothers divorce. This has affected him a lot by the way he thinks and the relationship with his parents. He uses his poster to talk about his feelings.
