Reading Log #5

The book that I have chosen to make a reading log on is "Greek Mythology". I love this book because it has many stories and myths about the twelve gods of Olympus. While I was reading today I could picture the landscape and mount Olympus. I cannot relate or connect to any of the characters from this book because they were all myths. I am having difficulties understanding the book but what I don't understand I re-read. I cannot compare what I have done that is similar to the twelve gods of Olympus because the book is about mythology. There is a lot of imagery in this book. Visual imagery is widely use and i think it is very affective. It allows me to paint a perfect picture in my mind of what is happening in the book. The plot of my book is not realist. It is based on mythology and the tales ancient Greeks created. Some of them might have been based on a true stories but we are unsure of which ones. I would definitely like to have Zeus as a friend. He is the god of all gods and the strongest one. He would always protect me and have my back. The part that I read today fits in with another book I read called "The Lost Army". It is about ancient Greece as well and both books have many similarities. They are both about Greek warriors, myths, and the twelve gods of Olympus. I predict that there will be more myths and legends about the twelve gods and I cannot wait to read them. If I could jump into the story I would stop Pandora's from opening the box and releasing all the worlds evil. I would try and prevent her. I could visualize the twelve gods of Olympus sitting together in harmony in the mountain in the sky and the beautiful landscape. I could compare myself to Zeus because he has a brother as well just like me.

Reading Log #4

The Trap

I have started a new book called The Trap by John Smelcer. So far I am really enjoying this book and having lots of fun with it as well. While I was reading today I could picture a large amount of snow. The passage I read describes and compares different types of snow. I could picture the snow in my head, the descriptions helped paint a perfect picture in my head. I can connect to the main character Johnny Least-Weasel. He is a teenager which I can connect to. I can connect to a part in the book when the main character is describing the snow. One description of snow was very familiar to me. Crusted snow occurs when on a warm winter day, the low sun melts only the thinnest layer of snow closest to the surface and refreezes at night. I encountered this type of snow in Russia and recall it very clearly. I recognized it immediately. So far I am not having difficulties with understanding my book. I am not that far into it so I am not having difficulties. I have experienced similar situations with the character. For example when he is describing the snow that I have experienced. The literary features in this book so far are imagery. The imagery used is in describing the different types of snow. The imagery is very well used and is very effective because it helps you imagine each types of snow. I believe that the plot of the book is very realistic. It is based on a trap set in Alaska and what it had captured. I think that it might be a very realistic and possibly true story. I would like to have the main character Johnny Least-Weasel as a friend because he is around my age and seems to be a really cool guy. We both find snow fascinating and pay great attention and detail to basic things. The part that I have read today doesn't fit together with the book that I have read previously because they are different types of genre and this book is a book that I would usually not read. I am willing to give it a try because it seems very interesting and exciting. I believe this book is very predictable because Johnnie's grandfather checks his traps every once in a while and I believe he will surprisingly find something. If I could jump into my book right now I warn the poor person who sank in the snow and is now trapped. I would worn him that the snow is loose because it has only fallen an hour ago. I would tell him to be cautious. The part that I could visualize the most in the book is "The sun was so low it reflected off the icy crystals of snow, nearly blinding the man who held a naked hand against his forehead.." This description helped me visualize this scene the most than all the others. I could imagine a blinding light reflecting off the snow crystals. It was written greatly and I cant wait to find more scenes like this one. None of the events or setting remind me of my life because I live in a very dry part of the world. We don't get a lot of snow here. We only get snow in the mountains so I cannot compare the events or settings of cold Alaska to hot Cyprus. I can compare myself to Johnny because of his attention to detail in basic things like snow.
